Roxane Butterworth

Roxane is Pathway lead and Lecturer on the Integrated Foundation Business and Management for the Creative Industries course at UCA. Roxane also teaches units on the pre-master’s creative business course. Roxane has taught on the Graduate Diploma Creative Business Unit, Fashion Business and Retail Diploma, supported IIF Fashion Textiles and worked as a Creative Tutor for Outreach at UCA.

Bio

Roxane uses her research, industry and creative education experience to support UCA students to develop creative, business, and sustainable skills needed to thrive in their futures in the creative industries. 

Roxane has a PgCert in Creative Education and Senior Fellowship of the HEA. Having graduated from University of Manchester (UMIST) with a BSc (Hons) in Textile Design & Design Management, before lecturing Roxane has over 10 years’ industry experience as a textile designer, product developer and in brand development for several UK retail companies across childrenswear, lingerie and accessories. Roxane has also worked in events and promotion. Roxane is enthusiastic to explore and encourage the importance of inclusivity and sustainability in all her teaching and design work. 

Roxane uses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),  UNESCO ESD competencies the sustainability mindset principles as a framework of reference in her research and curriculum development. 

Research statement

Roxane is interested in continuing research and industry collaborations connected to sustainability, ESD (Education of Sustainable Development), arts-based pedagogy, mindsets and creative education. Particularly exploring and using interdisciplinary and art-based pedagogy in creative business education. Roxane has focused her research to support embedding ESD and supporting a sustainability mindset in courses that she teaches.  

Roxane has published work including in the Journal of Useful Investigations in Creative Education (JUICE), PRME Routledge book series and has presented at conferences in the UK and Internationally.

  • The Sustainability Zine: The value of art-based pedagogy to support education for sustainability in a creative business and management course.” This chapter is included in the forthcoming book “The Power of Arts-Based Pedagogies: Transforming Mindsets to Shape Our Future” by Routledge in the PRME series to be published in 2025.
