Dr Dilek Hocaoglu

Dr Dilek Hocaoglu is a Senior Lecturer in Product and 3D Design at the University for the Creative Arts.

Bio

A designer, researcher and educator, Dr Dilek Hocaoglu works across design, culture and society. Her interdisciplinary research explores cultural heritage and city branding, food culture and society, and the role of design in social change and sustainability.

Dilek joined the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in 2024 as Senior Lecturer in 3D and Product Design and Year 2 Convenor for the 3D Design courses. She is also Industry Engagement Lead at UCA Canterbury School of Art, Architecture and Design. Her teaching commitments include BA 3D Design, MA Interior Design, MA Architecture and MA Product Design, alongside PhD supervision. She has been teaching in higher education since 2005, with previous academic appointments at Arts University Bournemouth, where she was a Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Design and Postgraduate Award Leader for MA Design and Innovation, and Gebze Technical University in Turkiye, where she was Associate Professor in Industrial Product Design and the Head of the Department. Prior to her academic career, Dilek worked as a designer across the glass, furniture and jewellery sectors, gaining professional design experience and receiving awards for her work.

Dilek was awarded her PhD in Industrial Product Design by Istanbul Technical University in 2012. Her PhD research examined the role of design in city branding through industrial and cultural heritage in Türkiye. During her PhD studies, she conducted research at Sheffield Hallam University, investigating the transformation of Sheffield’s creative industries, particularly the steel industry, and exploring how approaches to industrial transformation and creative industries could inform strategies for cities in Turkiye.

She completed her MSc in Industrial Product Design at Istanbul Technical University in 2004, researching the role of industrial product design in the formation of corporate identity. In 1999, she graduated with a BSc in Industrial Product Design from the same university, ranking third in her graduating cohort.

Alongside her research and teaching, Dilek has contributed to academic conferences and publications, and participated in exhibitions and workshops. She has collaborated with researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to develop and deliver interdisciplinary workshops and exhibitions. She has also initiated, developed and led university–industry collaborative projects, connecting design research and education with professional practice.

Research statement

Dilek’s research explores the relationships between design, culture and society, evolving from an initial focus on cultural heritage and city branding towards the connections between food, culture and society, and more recently, food, social change and sustainable futures.

Her early research explored the relationship between cultural heritage, place identity and city branding, examining how culture can contribute to the representation and development of cities. Her publications in this area include The Role of Design in Cultural Heritage-Based City Branding of Beypazari (2016) and Challenges in Promoting Cities Through Culture Within the New Global Economy (2016). This work established a foundation for her broader interest in the relationships between design, culture and society, which later expanded to include food culture, social change and sustainability.

Extending her research on food, culture and society, Dilek has increasingly focused on food, social change and sustainable futures. She is interested in how design, education and creative practices can address global food challenges, encourage sustainable behaviours and support more responsible relationships with food and the environment. Her publication The Contribution of Allotments to Planetary Health and Social Change (2024) reflects this direction. She has also explored the potential of design education and material experimentation to address food waste through Revaluing Food Waste Through Design Education: Material Experimentation for Sustainable Practice (2025).

She examines food as a cultural and social practice, considering its connections with communities, everyday life, health and place identity. Her work includes The Contribution of Gastronomy Tourism to the Branding Strategy of a City (2024), which connects food culture with her earlier research on city branding, and Social Media as a Powerful Tool for Food Preparation and Gaining Healthy Eating Habits (2024), which explores the role of digital platforms in shaping food practices and healthy eating.

Through collaborative, interdisciplinary research, Dilek has worked with academics from different disciplinary backgrounds on projects exploring the potential of games and creative practices to address social and environmental challenges. As Co-Investigator on Play for Impact: A UK–Turkiye Knowledge Exchange on Games and Social Change (2025), she contributes to research at the intersection of design, games and social change, including engagement with sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dilek regularly shares her research through invited talks, conference presentations and academic events. Her recent talks have explored how games can address global food problems, design approaches to global food issues, and the relationships between digital media, food and health. Her earlier talks examined the connections between design, cultural heritage and identity.
